High School Sports Broadcasting: A Look Inside Salesianum School’s New Production System

At PTZOptics, we’re always excited to see how our technology is making a difference in the world of live production, and our recent visit to Salesianum School in Wilmington, Delaware was no exception. Salesianum has taken its sports broadcasting to the next level with a student-run video production system powered by PTZOptics cameras, vMix, NewBlueFX Captivate for instant replay, and our PTZOptics Hive remote production platform.

A Game-Changing Setup for Student-Run Broadcasting

Salesianum’s sports program is known for its excellence both on and off the field, and their new video production system mirrors that same level of professionalism. The setup includes six PTZOptics cameras strategically placed around their football field. These cameras, connected via PTZOptics Wireless Cables, provide crisp, reliable video feeds that allow the student crew to capture every moment of the game from multiple angles.

What’s even more impressive is how these students, with guidance from their broadcast team, are learning real-world production skills. They’re not just hitting record—they’re using vMix to live stream the games to their audience and NewBlueFX Captivate for instant replay, bringing dynamic, professional-quality broadcasts to life for fans and coaches alike.

Expanding to More Sports in 2025

While the current focus is on football, Salesianum has big plans to expand its broadcast coverage to Baseball, Soccer, and Swimming in 2025. With PTZOptics cameras and Hive, they’ll be able to easily scale their production to cover all sports while maintaining the same high-quality, multi-angle broadcasts.

Each PTZOptics camera can be connected to the Local Area Network (LAN) for control with an IP Joystick like the SuperJoy. On the LAN, the school can control the camera remotely from any device also on the LAN. With PTZOptics Hive, PTZ cameras can be connected over the Wide Area Network (WAN) and therefore controlled from anywhere in the world.

The Power of Hive: Simplifying Production

Salesianum is just starting to test out PTZOptics Hive, a cloud-based production platform. Hive enables the school to remotely control and manage their cameras from a single, centralized interface, making it easier to produce complex, multi-camera broadcasts with fewer resources.

For a high school with multiple sports and events happening throughout the year, Hive provides a scalable solution that allows their student production team to handle a large volume of live broadcasts without needing to be in multiple places at once. The platform’s ability to provide remote management, camera control, and even color matching across all cameras gives Salesianum’s production a truly professional edge.

Professional Tools in the Hands of Students

At the heart of the system is the PTZOptics SuperJoy controller, which lets students control all six cameras with precision. The controller is linked to an HDMI monitor, providing a real-time view of all camera angles, making it easy for the production team to switch between different shots during live broadcasts.

With this setup, students are not just learning how to point a camera; they are gaining hands-on experience with industry-standard tools that prepare them for careers in broadcast production, sports media, and beyond.
